Murray Sawyer, JD

Founder and CEO

Murray Sawyer is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Westover Capital Advisors LLC, which he launched in 1999 with a vision of delivering thoughtful, multigenerational wealth management. He remains deeply engaged in every facet of the firm and takes pride in Westover’s collaborative culture and its team of credentialed, experienced, and trusted advisors. United by a shared purpose, the Westover team helps clients navigate investment, wealth management, and tax planning decisions—not just for today, but for generations to come.

The son of a DuPont chemical engineer, Murray attended Wilmington Friends School and Phillips Exeter Academy before earning a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he completed his senior honors thesis on the artist Andrew Wyeth. He went on to earn his law degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law in Nashville.

Murray brings decades of experience in estate planning, investment management, and business leadership. Before founding Westover, he practiced law for more than thirty-five years as the founding and managing partner of Sawyer, Akin, and Herron, P.A. His estate planning work emphasized the importance of well-crafted trusts and legal structures in helping families articulate and achieve their goals. He also oversaw his firm’s retirement plans, an experience that further shaped his appreciation for fiduciary responsibility and prudent investment stewardship.

An entrepreneur at heart, Murray founded American Incorporators, Ltd. almost fifty years ago. The company provides incorporation and corporate filing services nationwide, and he continues to serve as its chairman.

Murray is committed to philanthropy, particularly in the field of education. Motivated by experiences that shaped his own life, he has established, endowed, and supported scholarships across private schools, colleges, and graduate programs. He received national recognition from his college fraternity, Chi Psi, earning its Alumni Recognition Award for creating a postgraduate scholarship program for graduating brothers of the UNC chapter. He is the founder of the Murray and Randy Sawyer Foundation and has served for more than three decades as a Trustee of the Ellice and Rosa McDonald Foundation. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware.

His civic involvement includes serving as past President of the Rotary Club of Wilmington, where he received the John F. Newnam Award for exemplifying the Rotary International principle of “Service Above Self.” He is also a past President of the Lincoln Club of Delaware, a former twenty-year board member of the Pilot School, which serves children with learning differences, and a former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Friends of the University of North Carolina Libraries. Murray’s public service includes one term as a New Castle County Councilman—a position once held by President Joe Biden—as well as appointments to the Delaware Supreme Court Board of Professional Responsibility and the Delaware Health Facilities Authority.

Outside of work, Murray enjoys traveling the world, reading biographies, cheering on the Tar Heels, and spending weekends on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with his wife, children, and ten grandchildren.
